Silent Bond

"Silent Bond" explores the complex relationship between a Haitian mother and her Haitian-American daughter. In Haitian culture, we are deeply traditional and conservative. While these values help preserve our heritage, some aspects can be toxic.

Growing up in a Haitian household, my relationship with my mother was often strained and conflicted, and this painting reflects that tension. The mother and daughter face away from each other, symbolizing unspoken emotions and unresolved conflict. The mother’s stance represents her sacrifice, as she struggles to let me carve my own path. The flowers she holds signify her attachment to her own experiences, rather than guiding her daughter through life.

The daughter, facing forward, represents hope and the future, but she still yearns for her mother, reflected in her outstretched hand.

"Silent Bond" 24 in x 30 in stretched canvas. Made with acrylic paint.
